Mobile phone operating systems
As SmartPhones become cheaper more and more people are going to own and use them. These feature-packed phones are powered by a variety of different operating systems which all work in different ways.If you change your phone to a different manufacturer you may encounter a new operating system which may be better or worse than your previous phone. It's all a matter of personal taste, there is not a "best" operating system.
In the same way that some people always stick to the same handset manufacturer because they feel comfortable with their phones in the future people will be taking a lot of notice of operating systems as they each do things slightly differently and offer different features.
The current operating systems are listed below:
- Android
Linux-based open source mobile platform from Google. Hasn't been around for long so does not appear on many phones currently, however it is being developed by a number of leading manufacturers.
- BlackBerry OS
Powering all of the BlackBerry mobile phones this operating system is often thought to be the best for email applications.
- Windows Mobile
Microsoft's SmartPhone operating system. Designed for business users with a host of speciality applications. The latest version, Windows Mobile 6.5, released in October 2009.
- iPhone OS
Specifically developed for the Apple iPhone. Aimed more at individual consumers rather than business users so some business functions lacking.
- Symbian
Developed by Nokia and used on all of their SmartPhones until recently. Also available on handsets from other manufacturers.
- Maemo
Nokia's latest operating system based on Linux. Powers the new Nokia N900.
- Bada
Developed by Samsung and due to be powering their phones in 2010.
