What is an IP rating?

IP Rating stands for Ingress Protection Rating or International Protection Rating. This indicates the level of protection to which a product is protected against the intrusion of solid objects or dust, water or accidental contact (eg. being dropped onto a hard surface).

This can apply to a wide range of electronic products including mobile phones, and the numerical rating indicates how tough the device is.

The standard format is, for instance, IP45, where the first number indicates the level of protection against the ingress of solid bodies (eg. dust) and the second letter indicates the level of protection against ingress of water.

For office workers this is unlikely to be a major factor when deciding upon a phone, although anyone can accidentally drop a phone, or it could be thrown around by a mischievous toddler.

Manual workers on the other hand should seriously consider the IP rating of their mobile phone if it is going to be used on site and potentially knocked about.

The cost of replacing handsets is increasing so it is better not to damage them in the first place!

There are a number of durable handsets on the market now with IP ratings of 57 or 67. Not only are they extremely rugged and difficult to break but they also have other features which come in useful for manual workers.

For instance extra loud ringtones which can be heard over machinery, extra space between the buttons so that they can be used by a gloved hand, and extended battery life.

Manufacturers are so confident about the durability of their phones that in many instances they offer an unconditional 3-year warranty.
