Business Website Glossary
A glossary of terms relating to business websites.
- Web server: server that HTTP clients connect to in order to send commands and receive responses along with data contents
- HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol): The standard set of rules for sending text files across the Internet.
- Web space: also known as diskspace. A portion of the webserver where the pages of the website reside.
- Linux: generic term referring to Unix-like computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Open source therefore free to use and modify
- Windows: Microsoft Operating Systems and graphical user interfaces
- ASP: web server language VBScript. Also known as Classic ASP to differentiate from ASP.NET. Used to power dynamic website pages. Can only run on Windows operating system
- ASP.NET: Microsoft web application framework, successor to ASP (above). Can only run on Windows hosting.
- PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor): general-purpose scripting language. Open source. Runs best on Linux hosting but can run on Windows too.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol): used to exchange and manipulate files over a TCP/IP-based network, such as the Internet. Files are uploaded to the web server by ftp.
- IP (Internet Protocol) Address: a numerical label that is assigned to devices participating in a computer network.
- DNS (Domain Name System): Internet system to translate names into IP addresses. Eg. 21ctelecom.co.uk is routed to IP address 62.128.158.240
- SEO (Search Engine Optimisation): promoting and amending a website in order for it to be found as high as possible in the search engines (eg. Google).
- Gigabyte: 1024 megabytes. Commonly rounded down to one billion bytes or 1000MB
- HTML (Hypertext Markup Language): HTML is a set of tags that are used to define the content, layout and formatting of a web document.
- MySQL: Free open source database software often used on the web.
- SQL (Structured Query Language): An ANSI standard computer language for accessing and manipulating databases.
- Website: A collection of related web pages belonging to a company or an individual.
- WWW (World Wide Web): A global network of computers using the internet to exchange web documents
