Business Mobile Glossary
A glossary of terms relating to business mobiles.
- 3G: Third generation protocols. The 3G network supports much greater data rates allowing it to be used for things other than voice (eg. email/internet)
- Bluetooth: wireless short-range communication of voice and data. Can be used between both mobile and stationary devices (eg. mobile phone and computer)
- BPS: Bits Per Second - used to measure data transmission. The higher the bps the faster the connection.
- EDGE: Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. An alternative to 3G allowing similar data transmission speeds.
- GPRS: General Packet Radio Service. Used specifically for data transmission, somewhere between 2G and 3G in terms of speed.
- GSM Gateway: A device that utilises a sim card to enable traditional landline phones to connect to the mobile phone network, usually for lower call rates.
- Network: Company with a licence to provide wireless telephony services - eg. Vodafone, Orange etc..
- OS: Operating System. Powers the latest generation of SmartPhones. Operating Systems include Windows Mobile, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry OS, iPhone OS
- SIM: Subscriber Identity Module. A SIM card is inserted into a mobile phone to identify the user to the network and to authenticate transmission.
- SmartPhone: A mobile phone powered by an operating system that provides computer-like functionality.
- WAP: Wireless Application Protocol. Communication standard to make online access easier.
