What is telematics? The word telematics is a combination of telecommunications and informatics. Broadly speaking it can be described as the integration of telecommunication devices with information systems. It applies to any such integration but has become known more recently for the integration of mobile communication devices with GPS information. Used within road vehicles it is more usually known as vehicle telematics. Essentially vehicle telematics is an alternative way of describing vehicle tracking. Tracking devices can be incorporated into the cab of a vehicle, an articulated trailer unit or a cold-store freight trailer (where it can also monitor temperature). Alternatively it is now possible to track vehicles by mobile phone. The choice of fixed vehicle tracking or mobile device tracking is up to the customer.
