What is push email?

Push email provides your business with instant email. Once the email is sent from the originator it arrives at your mail server and is pushed directly to your SmartPhone.

There are no delays (except occasionally slow mail servers) and no user intervention is required.

Standard email, also known as polling email (eg. POP3) relies on you collecting the mail from your mail server. For instance by clicking on the send/receive button or via a scheduled download every x minutes by your mail client (eg. Outlook/Outlook Express).

By shortening the length of time between polling you can achieve a simulated push email service.

You do not have to download all of the messages, thus incurring large data charges or taking you up to your inclusive data limits, but can choose instead just to download the email headers. From this you can then decide which of your emails you need to read in full.

The first company to utilise push email outside of Asia were Research in Motion on their BlackBerry mobile phones. They made their excellent reputation for email by doing this but nowadays there are many other manufacturers offering handsets with push email.
