Whilst many people would understand the term SmartPhone, and could think of handsets that would fit this description, there is no defining industry standard which a phone must conform to to be classed as a smartphone. We would class a smartphone as any mobile with an operating system. Operating systems include Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, BlackBerry OS, iPhone OS and a number of others. Smartphones are mobile phones with advanced features such as email and proper internet browsing, often with a full keyboard facility for ease of use. Basically a mini-PC that can also be used as a phone. The capabilities of a smartphone generally include email with a personal organizer facility and the ability to use office software such as Microsoft Office meaning documents can easily be transferred and read between computer and phone. A smartphone would usually have a larger memory available too for the extra storage needed for the business user. Plus advanced connectivity for interacting with other devices. GPS is becoming standard for sat nav and tracking capabilities too. SmartPhones can also contain many of the usual entertainment features of a modern mobile phone including a camera, media player, games etc. for times when work is not an issue or for all of the family to use. One of the first names to spring to mind when thinking of SmartPhones or PDAs is BlackBerry, although many other manufacturers also offer similar phones with excellent features.
