Mobile phone viruses
With the increasing popularity of SmartPhones mobiles are becoming more and more like mini computers. On the plus side this brings a wide range of useful features at your fingertips wherever you are.
However, the more like computers that mobiles get the more chance there is of a widespread virus spreading. Their use of shared operating systems makes them vulnerable.
Currently the market for SmartPhones is relatively small and because this is split between a number of different operating systems the chance of a virus spreading easily is remote. As SmartPhones sales increase and operating systems take larger market share the chances increase accordingly.
There are already more than 600 viruses for mobile phones, many of which are extremely sophisticated. They can be spread by bluetooth or as MMS files.
Because viruses are currently difficult to spread, this gives the main mobile network operators the chance to block them before they spread too far. As viruses spread more quickly in the future more people will get them before the networks can respond.
Protect your mobile phone from viruses
If you have a SmartPhone with an operating system then you need to take sensible precautions just as you would on your home PC. If you receive a file from an unknown source it is best not to open it unless you are sure of the contents. Most of the companies who sell anti-virus software for PCs also offer similar products for mobile phones. These can protect your phone against malicious attacks and SMS spam as well as protecting your personal data in the event of your phone being lost or stolen.
