Femtocell Access GatewayFemtocells are low-power wireless access points that connect standard mobile devices to a mobile operator’s network using residential DSL or cable broadband connections. Similar in size to a standard router the Femtocell device plugs into fixed line broadband in a home or office creating a local 3G cloud of coverage. Vodafone are the first to launch Femtocells in Europe and their devices allow up to four handsets to use the service simultaneously. Both voice and data applications are supported. Where mobile coverage within the home or office is difficult a femtocell can provide full 3G coverage routing all calls over the internet. The Femtocell device itself can be purchased outright, with a monthly payment or as part of a standard inclusive bundle from the network. Femtocells can be used with any broadband line, are quick and easy to install, and will boost indoor coverage where mobile coverage is patchy. Mobile numbers to be linked to the Vodafone Access Gateway can be registered online. Unregistered numbers will not be able to use the service. Femtocells could ease pressure on the mobile networks and pave the way for lower call charges in the future.
