Make a charity donation by text messageDonating to charity via your mobile phone is going to get more transparent for you and more financially rewarding for your chosen charity. This is thanks to a new SMS short code starting 70 which has been designated a charity code. This means that when you donate to charity using one of these codes you know it is going to the right place and your donation is now free from VAT following an agreement with the mobile networks in July 2009. The abolition of VAT means that the charity itself is 10p in the £ better off for text gifts up to £10. Did you know that there are over 1.5 billion texts sent in the UK every week? More and more fundraising for charities could be done via text in the future. Red Nose Day in 2009 raised over £7.7million in text donations as free texts were allowed by the networks. However this was a one-off and charges for sending the texts will still be levied by the networks in the future. This is likely to be at your networks standard text rate. More information can be found on the network websites. Each sms short code has a value attached to it. So for instance you might text 70*35 to donate £1.50 or 70*36 to donate £3. The charity concerned will usually make it clear how much your donation will be before you send your message. For pay as you go users the amount is deducted from your balance and for contract users added to your next bill. If there are any charities who offer this type of service please get in touch by email (tony@21cnetwork.co.uk) with details and we will publish them on this page for people to donate.
