Accelerometers explainedMany new phones currently being released include accelerometers. You may even have a phone already containing one of these devices. The iPhone, LG cookie, Samsung Jet and numerous other mobiles now include accelerometers allowing the phone to auto-rotate and sense motion. The accelerometer measures acceleration forces, both static (eg. gravity) and dynamic (eg. moving the device). By measuring these forces the device can determine the angle of tilt and the way the device is moving. This information can be used in a variety of ways in a number of different devices.
In mobile phones the accelerometer can determine if the phone has been turned on its side and rotate the display accordingly from portrait to landscape. Rather than pressing a button you can shake the device to activate specific features. In gaming the motion sensing allows you to play through all 3 axis. Accelerometers can be used as pedometers, allowing you to calculate the distance travelled whilst the phone is in your pocket. You can use your phone as a spirit level, ensuring your new shelves are put up straight. More and more uses are being found for this technology by mobile phone developers and more applications created.
